The OAV encourages the public to file a complaint with the DPOR when they feel an optician is not following the regulations set forth by the Board for Opticians. When the value of licensure is considered by Virginia lawmakers, the number of complaints is always studied. Fewer complaints is often interpreted to mean that there is no need for licensure. A licensed optician is qualified to advise on the best lenses and provide the best fitting to his customers. The public is always encouraged to look for the optician's license before having eyewear made or fitted.
The best way to bring code violations to the attention of authorities is to file a complaint against the optician. The process is set forth in detail on the DPOR website.
A complaint form must be filed detailing the complaint.
The OAV encourages you to file a complaint with the DPOR when their rights according the Patient Bill of Rights are violated or if they have other issues with services performed.
Issues that deal with practicitioners dispensing contact lenses or glasses that are not licensed opticians, are not addressed by the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and the Board for Opticians. These issues must be referred to local law enforcement.
